About this product

The System Sensor M201EA is an addressable output module that lets the fire panel control auxiliary devices such as fire shutters or sounders. It can be wired for supervised or non-supervised operation, and its relay contacts are rated 30V DC, 2A resistive load. It suits installers adding control points to an analogue addressable loop.

Key features

  • Controls plant from the loop – switches auxiliary devices such as fire shutters or sounders
  • Wired the way the job needs – supervised or non-supervised output
  • Spots wiring faults – output circuit supervision with the link fitted across terminals 6 and 7
  • Status at a glance – a single tri-colour LED
  • Keeps the loop running – short circuit monitoring and isolators on the intelligent loop
  • Low drain on the loop – 160 µA maximum standby current

For installers

  • Power: loop operating voltage 15 to 32VDC (min 16.5VDC for LED operation). In supervised mode an external supply of max. 32V DC, min. 7V DC is monitored.
  • Mounting: M200E-SMB surface-mounting box, or the DIN bracket onto 35 mm x 7.5 mm Top Hat DIN rail inside a panel or enclosure.
  • Cabling: plug in terminals for conductors up to 2.5 mm². Relay contact rating 30V DC, 2A resistive load.
  • Compatibility: only for control panels using compatible proprietary analogue addressable protocols. Address set on rotary decade switches.
  • Standards: EN54-17: 2005 and EN54-18: 2005.

Frequently asked questions

Which fire panels does it work with?

Only panels using a compatible proprietary analogue addressable protocol. Check the panel maker's list of supported modules before ordering.

Can it switch mains voltage?

No. The relay contact rating is 30V DC, 2A resistive load.

What is the difference between supervised and unsupervised?

Supervised mode monitors the output wiring and the external power supply, using the supplied link across terminals 6 and 7. Unsupervised mode uses the provided diode from terminal 6 to Loop +.

How is the address set?

With rotary decade address switches, turned with a screwdriver. The number of addresses depends on the panel.

Does it need a back box?

It can sit in the M200E-SMB surface-mounting box, or clip onto a 35 mm x 7.5 mm Top Hat DIN rail inside an enclosure.

System Sensor M201EA Single Output Module, Supervised or Unsupervised Relay Output

Overview

A fire alarm often has to do more than sound. Shutters may need to close and other equipment may need a signal, and this module gives the panel a switched contact at that point.

It suits installers working on an analogue addressable loop who need a controlled output in the field.

How it works

  • Addressable: each device on the loop has its own address, so the panel can switch this one output on its own. The address is set on rotary decade switches.
  • Relay output: when the panel switches the relay to the energised state, the contacts change over. The LED can be set to show continuous green at that moment.
  • Supervised mode: the module watches its output wiring and the external power supply. If that supply falls below 7V a fault indication is achievable, and terminal 12 can take a switched negative fault signal.
  • Isolators: built-in isolators protect the loop from short circuits. They can be wired out where loops carry high currents, for example if sounders are used.

Where to use it

Typical jobs are fire shutters and sounder circuits. It can sit in the M200E-SMB surface box beside the equipment, or on a DIN rail inside a control panel or other suitable enclosure.

Humidity is rated 5% to 95% relative humidity, non-condensing. In most installations that means a dry indoor position.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 30V DC, 2A resistive: fine for low voltage door holders, sounder supplies and signals to other systems. Larger or mains loads need an interposing relay.
  • Inductive loads: coils such as solenoids can cause switching surges that damage the contacts. Fit a suitable Transient Voltage Suppressor, for example 1N6284CA, across the load.
  • 160 µA standby: the most the module draws from the loop with no communication, which helps when adding up loop loading.

Installing it

Disconnect loop power before installing. The module is an electrostatic sensitive device, so handle it with care.

For supervised operation, fit the supplied link across terminals 6 and 7 and use a polarised load. For unsupervised operation, connect terminal 6 to Loop + through the provided diode.

Whether the panel shows the supervised fault warnings is dependant on panel software, so confirm it with the panel's documentation.

Planning your system

List each item the fire alarm must control, such as shutters or a remote fire alarm sounder, and allow one output per independent action. A separate fire alarm power supply is needed where the load is powered externally.

The M201EA-240 is a different model, so check which one the job calls for. More options sit in fire panel modules and interfaces, and the guide to commercial fire alarm systems explains why loop devices must match the panel protocol.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EN54-17: 2005: the EN54 part for short circuit isolators in fire detection systems.
  • EN54-18: 2005: the EN54 part for input and output devices on fire detection systems.
