What this kit is for

A door entry system lets someone inside speak to a caller and release the door without walking to it. Adding a keypad means regular users can let themselves in with a code, so they do not need a key or a person inside to answer.

This Videx kit is the one button surface version of the 4000 Series Digiphone Kit. With one call button, it suits a single home or office where the wall can take a surface mounted panel.

How it works

• Call and answer: the caller presses the button on the panel and the Art.3011 telephone rings with an electronic call tone. Lifting the handset opens the speech path, and the door open push button releases the door.
• Codelock: the Art.4800 module has 3 codes and 3 relay outputs. The lock output is a dry contact, which is a plain switch with no voltage of its own.
• 3+1 wiring: the call tone and lock release relay sit in the door panel and not in the handset. That is why the handset needs only 4 connections.

Where to use it

The panel has a mirror stainless steel front plate and sits on the wall in its surface box, so no recess is needed. It is compatible with 4000 series surface rainshields. Plan on a rainshield or a sheltered position, and check with Videx if you need a weather rating.

Check any door on an escape route with whoever holds the building's fire strategy. The kit does not include the lock, and the lock choice decides how the door behaves when power is lost.

What the figures mean in practice

• 4-8 digits: a longer code is harder to guess. A code that many people share still gets passed on, so change it now and then.
• 1-99 seconds or latching: set a short time for most doors, long enough to reach and push the door. Latching keeps the output switched until it is switched again, so think before using it on a secure door.
• Up to 3 audiophones per button: a second or third telephone can be added on the same call button, for example upstairs or in a back office.

Installing it

• Cable: larger cable distances using small core sizes can be achieved between panel and telephones. Check the run on long jobs against Videx's instructions.
• Power supply: the Art.321 goes in a type A 3 module DIN box, so allow space on a DIN rail or in a suitable enclosure. As a rule, mains connection should be made by a competent electrician.
• Extra telephones: the kit includes one, and the Art.3011 is the model supplied with it. Other wall telephones may not suit the 3+1 wiring, so match the series.

Planning your system

The job also needs a lock release, plus its own supply if the kit's power supply does not suit it. As a rule, most doors use one of the electric strikes or a maglock, wired through the dry contact.
