Videx Door Entry Speaker Module, 1 Button, 4000 Series Matt Stainless 4838-1/M

Overview

A speaker module is the part of a door entry panel that a visitor talks into. This one is a single module from the Videx 4000 series, so it joins other modules of that series in one panel.

The part number tells you the version. The -1 means one built-in button, and the /M marks the matt 316 stainless steel finish.

How it works

A visitor presses a button to call. The module then sounds a tone and shows its status lights, so the visitor knows the call has gone through.

Those lights show four states: busy, call in progress, communication open and door open. Speech runs through the module's two way amplifier, and its relay switches whatever release is wired to it.

Where to use it

It suits traditional single entrance or multiple entrance systems. With one built-in button it covers a small call list by itself, and button modules extend that list.

Its protection ratings matter at a street door or communal entrance, where rain and knocks are part of daily life.

What the figures mean in practice

• 2A max.: the most current the relay contacts may switch. As a rule, a release drawing more needs its own switching arrangement.
• 150mA: the highest consumption, reached during a call. Use it when adding up the load on a shared power supply.
• -20°/+60°C: the temperature range the module works across.
• 1 module: the module's size within the 4000 series. It tells you how much of a panel frame or back box it takes up.

Installing it

• First switch bank: SW1 covers the call tone, conversation time and door open time. It also sets the number of rings, on “5+1” systems only.
• Second switch bank: SW2 turns the reassurance tone on or off and picks the system type. It also sets automatic recall when the handset is lifted, on “4+1” systems only.
• Exit switch: PTE usually stands for push to exit. The input is switched 0V and push-to-make, so check any exit button you use is a push-to-make type.
• Volume: POTs are small adjusters on the module. Set microphone and speaker levels once the panel is in place, so they suit the real background noise.

Planning your system

A complete entrance usually also needs a back box or front support frame, a power supply, apartment stations, a lock release and the cable.

As a rule, a fail safe lock releases when power stops, and a fail secure lock stays locked. On an escape route a door usually still needs a release route, so agree it with whoever holds the building's fire strategy.

Standards and ratings explained

• IK07: IK is a scale for resistance to knocks. A higher number means more impact resistance.
• IP65: the first digit means dust tight, and the second means protected against water jets.
• DDA compliant: this describes the LEDs and tones. DDA refers to the Disability Discrimination Act, since replaced in Great Britain by the Equality Act 2010, and one module does not make a whole entrance compliant.
