What this antenna is for

A GSM intercom calls your phone over the mobile network, so it only works as well as the signal at the door panel. Metal panels, brick walls and basements can all weaken that signal.

This Videx antenna moves the receiving point away from the module, to somewhere the signal is better. It connects to the module by a single cable.

Where to use it

It is made for external use and surface mounting, so a wall or the top of a gate pier is a typical position. As a rule, try it in the chosen spot before you fix it, and keep the cable away from mains cable where possible.

Treat exposed coastal or heavily wet positions with care, and check the IP rating with Videx first.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 3m cable: this limits how far the antenna can sit from the module. Measure the route first, including any bends, because the length is approximate.
  • RG174 coax: a thin, flexible coaxial cable, where a centre wire sits inside a screen. As a rule, avoid tight bends and crushing, as both can harm the signal.
  • 50 Ohms and SMA male: impedance and connector type must match the module.

Installing it

  • Fixing: the antenna itself is 120 (H) x 30 (base diameter) mm, so a small flat area is all it needs. The L bracket and fixings allow a wall or post fix.
  • Connecting: screw the SMA connector to the module's antenna socket, following the module's instructions. The right angle SMA adaptor helps where space behind the panel is tight.
  • Testing: check signal strength on the module before closing up, and make a test call from the door panel.

Planning your system

The antenna works with a GSM module such as the GSM4K PRO series (Art.4810), and that module also needs a working SIM on a network with coverage at the site. Check which networks are strong at the door before choosing the SIM.

If signal is poor even after moving the antenna, Videx offers the 434/HG/5M and 434/HG/15M high gain antennas, with longer cables, for areas with poor signal quality.
