Overview

A push to exit button lets people leave through a door that is held by an electric lock. Magnetic locks and other electro mechanical locks need one, because they do not have a handle that releases them.

This one sits with the wider range of exit buttons and door release devices, and is a plain, tough choice for doors with heavy use.

How it works

• NO pair: normally open. These wires connect when the button is pressed, which is what most controller exit inputs look for.
• NC pair: normally closed. These wires disconnect when the button is pressed, which is how a power circuit to a lock can be broken.
• PTE input: short for push to exit, the terminal on an access controller that tells it the exit is allowed.

Where to use it

IP66 means dust tight and protected against powerful water jets, so it copes with an outside wall. On an exposed gate or door, it is still worth checking the back box and cable entry are sealed as well.

Installing it

A fail safe lock releases when power stops, while a fail secure lock stays locked. A maglock is usually fail safe, and an electric strike can be either, so check the lock's documentation before choosing which wires to use.

Wiring to a controller lets it time the release and log the exit. Most access control panels have a dedicated input for this, and the release time is set there.

This button is not a substitute for an emergency release. On an escape route, the door usually needs a separate release route, so speak to whoever holds the fire strategy. The access control guide explains why, and the magnetic lock guide covers door hardware.

Planning your system

• Flush or surface: where no flush box is possible, the SP80/S is the surface version in the same range.
• Current: check the lock's current against the 4A (max.) rating before wiring it directly through the button.
