Frequently asked questions

Is a door lock included?

No. This kit has no lock among its parts. The panel has a lock release relay, so check any lock against its 12-24Vac/dc 2A max dry contact rating.

What cable does it need?

Two non-polarity wires, and no coaxial cable. Videx does not recommend shielded cables, and asks that the run stays clear of mains or other high power cables.

How many fobs come with it?

2 tag format fobs and 1 card format fob. The reader takes up to 50 programmable users.

Can more videophones be added?

Yes, up to 4 on a call button. Larger jobs can reach 12 apartments with additional button expansion modules.

Is the door panel weatherproof?

Check the IP rating with Videx before fitting it on an exposed wall. The panel's working temperature is -20 +60 °C, and a sheltered position is the safer choice.

Videx ESVKX-1S/6286 video door entry kit, surface panel, videophone, power supply, card and fobs

Videx Video Door Entry Kit, 2 Wire, 1 Button Surface Panel, Proximity, 3.5" Videophone ESVKX-1S/6286

Overview

A video intercom lets someone indoors see and speak to a caller before opening the door. This kit adds a proximity reader, so regular users can let themselves in with a fob or card.

This door entry kit suits a single home or small business. Videx also offers the range for low-rise apartment blocks when more buttons are added.

How it works

  • 2 wire bus: a bus is one shared line that carries power, sound, picture and data, so every device connects to the same pair instead of its own cores.
  • Non-polarity: the two wires can go either way round on the terminals, which removes a common wiring mistake.
  • Proximity reader: the reader sits behind the panel's nameplate window. Presenting a programmed fob or card opens the door without a call.
  • Lock relay: the relay has common, normally open and normally closed contacts, and it can also run as a capacitive discharge output. That second mode gives the lock a short pulse from the panel itself.

Where to use it

Typical positions are a house front door, a small office entrance or a shared door to a few flats. The surface box suits walls that cannot be cut into.

The panel is the outdoor station. Check its IP rating with Videx, choose a sheltered position where you can, and confirm exposure limits before fitting one on an open wall.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 50 programmable users: this counts people with their own fob or card. The kit's fobs and card only make a start, so order more for a bigger household or team.
  • 0.8A supply: all the panel and videophone load comes from this one unit, so check Videx's instructions before adding further videophones.

Installing it

  • Who fits it: Videx recommends a competent electrician, security or communications engineer.
  • Lock mode: Videx suggests dry contact mode in very dusty environments or peculiar climate conditions. That mode needs a separate supply for the lock.
  • Camera angle: the camera has 13° of tilt adjustment, so set it for the height of your callers after fitting the box.
  • Balance and volume: the panel has adjustable microphone, speaker and balance controls. Set them on a live call, with any outside noise present.

Planning your system

This kit has no lock among its parts. The job therefore needs an electric lock, such as an electric strike, within the relay's limits. On a door that forms part of an escape route, get the release design agreed with whoever holds the fire strategy.

Videx offers the 955/T proximity fob for extra users, and the 3183 audiophone as a 2 wire bus handset for another room. The 2305 extension relay and the 2301N switcher are also accessories for the range, and two 2301N units are needed to reach the maximum entrances.

Keep the cable run away from mains and other high power cables, as interference can affect sound and picture.
