About this product

The Vimpex VMIS2S-R is a mains isolator switch for safely isolating the mains voltage supply to fire systems. It suits fire alarm installers and maintainers. Only an authorised person with the key can isolate the supply, and both Live and Neutral are switched. It is a red, surface, 8A unit.

Key features

  • Stops casual switching off – the supply can only be isolated by an authorised person, by means of a keylock switch

Overview

A fire alarm control panel needs a dependable mains supply, along with a safe way to isolate it for maintenance. An ordinary switch can be turned off by anyone passing.

This Vimpex unit answers both needs by placing the isolation behind a key.

How it works

  • Mains path: the mains supply comes in on one side, through the fuse, and switched mains goes on to the fire panel.
  • Earth: there is an earth terminal on the input and output sides.
  • Double pole: the switch breaks two conductors at once, so no live or neutral path stays connected through the switch when it is off.

Where to use it

It belongs on the mains supply to a fire alarm system, near the equipment it serves. Where it goes should follow the system design and the current edition of the standard.

The surface version suits walls where a flush box is not practical, and where surface trunking already runs.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 8 Amp contact rating: the most the switch contacts are rated to carry, at 250 V ac. It is separate from the fuse rating, which protects the circuit.
  • Fast fuse: a fast fuse blows quickly on overload, so replace it with the same type.
  • KEY NUMBER: the key number is 400-220. Note it in the site records so that a replacement can be identified.

Installing it

  • Before you start: this is mains work, so it should be done by a competent person with the supply isolated and proven dead.
  • Depth: check the space on site, as the height with the backbox is 58 mm.
  • Keys: keep the key with the person responsible for the fire system, not hanging beside the unit.

Planning your system

You will still need suitable fire-rated cable and the fused supply that feeds the unit. Other fire alarm accessories and the control panel are separate items. Check the panel's supply needs against the fuse and contact ratings.

  • BS 5839: the British Standard code of practice for fire detection and alarm systems in buildings other than homes. This unit refers to Part 1 : 2017.
  • FR ABS: a flame-retardant plastic, used here for the enclosure.
