Overview

This is part of Vimpex's Identifire range, and VID stands for Visual Indication Device. It gives a tone and a flashing light from one small faceplate.

Vimpex aims it at places needing a discreet device. It sits among many other types in the fire alarm sounders and beacons range.

How it works

In most installations, the panel's sounder circuit feeds the unit, and the tritone sounder and strobe run together from that supply. Check the wiring against the unit's documentation before connecting it.

A selectable output gives you two bands to choose from, so the same part can suit a quiet office or a louder area. Choose High or Low to suit the design.

Where to use it

• Fire systems: Conventional and 2-wire systems, with the strobe as an extra visual cue alongside the alarm.
• Other alarms: It also suits general alarm and signalling systems.
• Temperature limits: The rated range keeps it to conditions between -5°C and +50°C, so it is not one for a cold store.

What the figures mean in practice

• Current: Sounder circuits have a limit on total load, so multiply the current draw by the number of devices and check it against the panel or module output.
• Sound level: The guide to fire alarm categories and EN54 sounders explains why output at distance is what counts. Design for the level you need at the listener, not at the device.

Installing it

Allow for a recessed single gang box in the wall, as this is the flush version.

The separate Surface Mount codes are the ones to look at where a wall cannot be recessed.

Standards and ratings explained

EN 54 Part 3 is the European standard for fire alarm sounders. This approval covers the sounder, not the strobe.

EN 54-23 is the standard for visual alarm devices used as a primary warning. Ask whoever holds the fire strategy if the design calls for one.
