Yuasa REC14-12 12V 14Ah Cyclic AGM VRLA Battery, Faston 6.35mm

Overview

A cyclic battery is made to be run down and recharged again and again, rather than sitting on float charge. The REC series is Yuasa's cyclic range of sealed AGM VRLA batteries.

AGM means the electrolyte is held in glass mat separators, so there is no free liquid to spill and no topping up.

How it works

  • Valve regulated: each cell has a low pressure release valve that lets gas escape and then reseals.
  • Depth of discharge: this is how much of the capacity is used before recharging. The shallower each cycle, the more cycles the battery delivers.

Where to use it

Choose it for equipment that runs from the battery day to day and is then recharged, rather than for pure standby duty. For standby duty, a standby battery is usually the better match.

Its working range is -15°C to +45°C for charge, discharge and storage, so keep it out of very hot or freezing spaces.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Cycle table: used fully every time, it reaches 80% capacity after about 300 cycles. Kept to a quarter of capacity per cycle, that rises to around 1400.
  • 20-hour versus 10-hour capacity: the battery gives more when discharged slowly, which is why the 20-hour figure is higher.
  • Charge voltage: a charger set for cyclic use runs at a higher voltage than float. As a rule, use a charger made for cyclic lead acid batteries.

Installing it

Fit it upright or at up to 90° from upright, and never inside a sealed container, because VRLA batteries can release hydrogen gas.

Connect red to positive and black to negative on the Faston terminals, and check charger output with a meter after fitting.

Planning your system

Size the battery from the load current and the run time needed, then allow margin for ageing. A matching battery charger keeps cycle life close to the figures above.

Other sizes and chemistries are in the specialist and industrial batteries range, and the Yuasa batteries range covers standby models too. A battery tester helps confirm health between cycles.

For other sizes and chemistries, browse the wider batteries and power supplies range.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EUROBAT: an industry class for the float life of standby batteries. This cyclic battery is not classified.
  • UL94:HB: a flammability rating for the plastic case; HB is the standard grade, not a flame retardant case.
