Yuasa 12V 17Ah VRLA Battery, Flame Retardant UL94:V0 Case, M5 Terminals NP17-12IFR

Overview

Valve regulated batteries are the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because it is never topped up with water.

This Yuasa battery's main difference is its case plastic, which carries a flame retardant rating.

How it works

  • Lead calcium grids: the grids are the metal frames that carry the current inside each cell, and the calcium is there for longer life.
  • Absorbed Glass Mat: a glass fibre mat holds the acid against the plates, so there is no liquid free to spill.
  • Gas recombination: gas made during charging is turned back into water inside the cell. If pressure rises too far, a valve lets gas out and then closes again.

Where to use it

Batteries of this type are often used as back-up in alarm panels, a small UPS and other standby equipment. Follow the battery type and size the equipment's maker asks for.

Its discharge range runs from -20°C to +60°C, but charging stops short of that at -15°C to +50°C. Plan around the narrower range in unheated or hot enclosures.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Two capacity figures: the 17 Ah figure is a 20-hour discharge and the 15.7 Ah figure a 10-hour one. Faster discharge gets less out of a lead acid battery.
  • Correction factors: the -3 and -4 mV figures adjust the charge voltage when the temperature moves away from the standard 20°C. A charger without this relies on a fairly steady temperature.
  • 4.25 A charge limit: this applies to cyclic or boost charging. On float charge there is no limit.
  • Short-circuit risk: a dropped spanner across the terminals is dangerous, so protect the circuit and keep tools clear.
  • 15 mΩ impedance: lower means less voltage sag under load. It is a handy comparison when checking an old battery against a new one.

Installing it

  • Terminals: the threads are in the battery, so have M5 bolts of a suitable length and crimped ring terminals to hand. Tighten to 2.45 Nm.
  • Weight: at 6.1 kg it needs a secure shelf or strap, so that it cannot shift and strain the leads.
  • Lifting: do not hang the battery by any handles where they are fitted.
  • Sealed spaces: keep it out of airtight enclosures. Hydrogen needs somewhere to go.

Planning your system

Work out the standby load first, then check this capacity covers the time your standard requires. Allow margin for ageing, because capacity falls over the years.

The guide to replacing burglar alarm batteries covers the general steps, and a battery tester helps to spot a tired battery at each service visit.

Old batteries must go for recycling under local and national laws and regulations.

Standards and ratings explained

  • UL94:V0: a flammability class for plastics, and a high one. It describes the case material only, so it does not replace any fire requirement for the equipment around it.
  • EUROBAT Standard Commercial: an industry class that describes the expected life band, here 3 to 5 years. Treat it as a planning guide and not a promise.
  • EN IEC 60896-21: the test method for the internal resistance figure.
  • ISO9001: a standard for how a maker runs its quality management. It is not a performance rating for this battery.
