Frequently asked questions

What size is the NP24-12IFR?

166.0 mm long, 175.0 mm wide and 125.0 mm in overall height. It weighs 8.65 kg.

What does FR mean on a battery?

FR stands for flame retardant. Here the case and lid are ABS rated UL94-VO.

What charge voltage does it need?

13.65 V for floating and 14.82 V for cyclic use, both at 20°C. Cyclic charging has its maximum current limited to 0.25C.

Can it be fitted on its side?

Yes. It can be operated, charged or stored in any position without leakage, as long as it is not charged with the terminals downward.

How long does it last?

The design life is 5 years on standby use at 20°C. On cycle use it depends on depth of discharge, from 100 cycles at 100% to 700 cycles at 30%.

Does it need topping up with water?

No. It has sealed construction with a pressure relief system, so there is nothing to top up.

Yuasa NP24-12IFR 12V 24Ah flame retardant VRLA battery, front view

Yuasa 12V 24Ah VRLA Battery, Flame Retardant ABS Case NP24-12IFR

Overview

VRLA means valve regulated lead acid. It is the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because you never top it up with water.

This Yuasa battery is the flame retardant version in this size. That is the one to look at when a specification asks for flame retardant materials.

How it works

  • Sealed with a relief system: the case is sealed, and a pressure relief system deals with any gas build-up. That is why it never needs water.
  • Heavy duty grids: the grids are the metal frames inside each cell that carry the current.
  • Float and cyclic: float means the charger holds the battery topped up on standby. Cyclic means the battery is regularly discharged and fully recharged, which needs a different voltage.

Where to use it

Batteries of this type are often used as standby back-up in equipment such as a UPS. Follow the battery size and type the equipment's maker asks for.

It charges from -15°C to 50°C and discharges from -20°C to 60°C. Allow for that in an unheated enclosure.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Two capacity figures: Ah is charge stored. It holds 24.00 Ah measured over 20 hours and 21.10 Ah over 10, because a faster discharge gets less out of a battery.
  • Depth of discharge: this is how much of the capacity gets used before recharging. Using 30% each time gives 700 cycles and 50% gives 400, so a larger battery used gently can last longer.
  • 0.25C: C stands for the capacity in amps, so 0.25C means a quarter of that. It is the most current to allow on cyclic charging.
  • 11 mΩ internal resistance: a lower value means the voltage sags less under load. It is a handy comparison when testing an old battery against a new one.

Installing it

  • Terminals: tighten to 2.5 Nm, keeping well under the 6 Nm maximum, and keep polarity right.
  • Weight: at 8.65 kg it needs a secure shelf or strap, so that it cannot shift and strain the leads.
  • Short circuits: tape or cover a loose lead while you work, since a battery can deliver a very high current through a dropped tool.
  • Ventilation: as a rule, lead acid batteries can release hydrogen, particularly when overcharged, so do not fit them in an airtight container.

Planning your system

Work out the standby load of the system first, then check that this capacity covers the time your standard requires. Add margin for ageing, because capacity falls over the years.

You will also need a suitable charger or a charging circuit that matches the voltages above. If you use a battery tester, check it covers this voltage and size.

Recyclable materials are used in the battery, so send old ones for proper recycling and never to general waste.

Standards and ratings explained

  • UL94 rating: UL94 is a flammability class for plastics, and this housing carries one of the stricter ratings. It describes the housing only, so it does not replace any fire requirement for the equipment around it.
  • Design life: a figure for planned replacement at 20°C. Heat and deep discharges usually shorten real service, so plan your replacement dates from it and test in between.
