About this product

The Yuasa NP24-12I is a 12V 24Ah valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery for general purpose use. It suits installers and maintainers who need a larger 12V battery on float or cyclic charge. It measures 166 x 175 x 125 mm, weighs 9 kg and has M5 female threaded terminals.

Key features

  • 12V power in a standard block – 12 V nominal and 24 Ah at the 20-hr rate
  • No free acid inside – Absorbed Glass Mat construction
  • Comes back after heavy use – good recovery from deep discharge
  • Fits awkward spaces – can be installed and operated in any orientation except permanently inverted
  • Planned service life – EUROBAT Standard Commercial 3 to 5 years, Yuasa design life up to 5 years at 20°C
  • Slow loss in storage – capacity loss of about 3% per month at 20°C

For installers

  • Power: float charge 13.65 (±1%) V at 20°C with no current limit. Cyclic or boost charge 14.5 (±3%) V at 20°C, limited to 6 A.
  • Mounting: 166 (±1) x 175 (±1) mm, 125 (±2) mm high, 9 kg. Any orientation except permanently inverted.
  • Cabling: Threaded terminal, M5 (F), female. Torque 2.45 Nm.
  • Compatibility: check the equipment's own battery and charging figures against this one, and use a charger that matches them.
  • Standards: EUROBAT Standard Commercial 3 to 5 years, with ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 certifications.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the NP24-12I?

166 (±1) mm long, 175 (±1) mm wide and 125 (±2) mm high. It has a mass of 9 kg.

What charge voltage does it need?

13.65 (±1%) V on float and 14.5 (±3%) V for cyclic or boost charging, both at 20°C. Use a charger set for lead acid batteries.

Can it be mounted on its side?

Yes. It can be installed and operated in any orientation except permanently inverted.

Can it go in a sealed box?

No. VRLA batteries release hydrogen gas which can form explosive mixtures in the air, so it must not be placed inside a sealed container.

How long does it last?

Yuasa gives a design life of up to 5 years at 20°C, and EUROBAT classes it Standard Commercial, 3 to 5 years. Heat and repeated deep discharge usually shorten real service life.

What terminals does it have?

M5 female threaded terminals, with a torque of 2.45 Nm. Your leads need ring terminals or bolted fittings to suit, not push-on tabs.

Yuasa NP24-12I 12V 24Ah VRLA battery, front view

Yuasa NP24-12I 12V 24Ah VRLA Battery, M5 Threaded Terminals

Overview

VRLA means valve regulated lead acid. It is the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because you never top it up with water.

This Yuasa battery is a general purpose model. At 9 kg with bolted terminals, it is a bigger block than the small push-on types, so plan its shelf and leads first.

How it works

  • Glass mat: the electrolyte is held in a mat rather than sloshing about as free liquid. That is why orientation is so flexible.
  • Lead calcium grids: lead calcium is widely used because it limits water loss and self discharge.
  • Valves: each cell has a low pressure release valve. Gas can escape and the valve then reseals.
  • Float and cyclic: float means the charger holds the battery topped up on standby. Cyclic means the battery is regularly discharged and fully recharged, which needs a different voltage.

Where to use it

Batteries of this type are often used as standby back-up in equipment such as a UPS.

Follow the battery size and type the equipment's maker asks for.

Keep it out of sealed enclosures. The gas it can release needs somewhere to go.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 20-hr rate: Ah is charge stored. The 24 Ah figure is measured over 20 hours, and a faster discharge gets less out of a battery.
  • 6 A charge limit: this applies to cyclic or boost charging. On float charge there is no limit.
  • 11 mΩ impedance: a lower value means the voltage sags less under load. It is a handy comparison when testing an old battery against a new one.
  • Correction factors: the -3 and -4 figures adjust the charge voltage when the temperature is not the standard 20°C. Chargers without this feature rely on a reasonably steady temperature.
  • 656 A short-circuit current: this is the current the battery can drive into a fault, so fuse the leads to suit. It goes with 22.19 mΩ internal resistance, both to EN IEC 60896-21.

Installing it

  • Terminals: this model uses bolted M5 female terminals. Tighten to 2.45 Nm, and keep polarity right.
  • Lifting: at 9 kg, lift it by the case. Do not suspend the battery by any handles where they are fitted.
  • Short circuits: tape or cover a loose lead while you work, since a battery can deliver a very high current through a dropped tool.

Planning your system

Work out the standby load of the system first, then check that this capacity covers the time your standard requires. Add margin for ageing, because capacity falls over the years.

You will also need a suitable charger or a charging circuit that matches the voltages above. A battery tester helps to spot a tired battery at each service visit.

Old batteries must go for recycling under local and national laws and regulations.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EUROBAT Standard Commercial: an industry class that describes the expected life band, here 3 to 5 years. Treat it as a planning guide rather than a promise.
  • UL94:HB: a flammability class for plastics, and the case rating of this standard model. There is also an FR version at UL94:V0, so check the model if a specification asks for that.
  • ISO9001: this covers the maker's quality management, not the performance of a single battery.
