About this product

The Yuasa REC36-12I is a 12V 36Ah VRLA battery for cyclic use, meaning equipment that regularly runs its battery down and recharges it. VRLA stands for valve regulated lead acid. It suits installers and owners working with larger loads. It measures 196 x 130 x 158 mm and has M5 threaded terminals.

Key features

  • Built for repeated cycling – heavy duty lead calcium grids for superior cyclic life
  • Cycle life to plan around – 300 at 100% DOD (depth of discharge) and 1400 at 25% DOD, down to 80% capacity
  • No free acid – Absorbed Glass Mat construction
  • Recovers well – excellent recovery from deep discharge
  • Secure bolted connections – M5 (F) threaded terminals
  • Fits most ways round – any orientation except permanently inverted
  • Strong short bursts – maximum discharge current 360 A for 1 second and 140 A for 1 minute

For installers

  • Power: 12 V nominal. Float charge 13.65 V (±1%) and cyclic or boost charge 14.52 V (±3%) per block at 20°C, with a 9 A charge current limit.
  • Mounting: 196 (±2) x 130 (±2) mm, 158 (±3) mm high, 169 (±3) mm over the terminals, 11.2 kg. Any orientation except permanently inverted.
  • Cabling: threaded terminal M5 (F), torque 2-3Nm.
  • Compatibility: check the charger and the equipment's own battery and charging figures against these.
  • Standards: case ABS (UL94:HB). Third party certifications: ISO9001 - Quality Management Systems and UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES Inc.

Frequently asked questions

What size is this battery?

196 (±2) mm long, 130 (±2) mm wide and 158 (±3) mm high, 169 (±3) mm over the terminals. It has a mass of 11.2 kg.

How many cycles does it last?

It depends on the depth of discharge. It gives 300 at 100% DOD, 500 at 75%, 600 at 50% and 1400 at 25%, each down to 80% capacity.

What charge voltage does it need?

13.65 V (±1%) per block on float and 14.52 V (±3%) per block for cyclic or boost charging, both at 20°C.

What are the terminals?

M5 female threaded terminals, so the connection is made with a bolt. The torque is 2-3Nm.

Can it go in a sealed box?

No. VRLA batteries release hydrogen gas which can form explosive mixtures in the air, so do not place it inside a sealed container.

Is this the flame retardant version?

No. This one has a standard ABS (UL94:HB) case. An FR version at UL94:V0 is also made.

Yuasa 12V 36Ah Cyclic Industrial VRLA Battery, M5 Threaded Terminals REC36-12I

Overview

Valve regulated batteries are the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because it is never topped up with water.

This Yuasa battery is a high cyclic performance type. That sets it apart from a battery that spends most of its life waiting on standby.

How it works

  • Lead calcium grids: the grids are the metal frames that carry the current inside each cell. Here they are heavy duty, aimed at repeated charging and discharging.
  • Absorbed Glass Mat: a glass fibre mat holds the acid against the plates, so there is no liquid free to spill.
  • Gas recombination: gas made during charging is turned back into water inside the cell. If pressure rises too far, a valve lets gas out and then closes again.

Where to use it

Usually, a cyclic battery suits equipment that runs from the battery and is then recharged, often daily. Follow the battery type and size the equipment's maker asks for.

Its working range for charge and discharge is -15°C to +45°C. Allow for this in unheated plant rooms.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Depth of discharge (DOD): this is how much of the capacity gets used before recharging. Using a quarter each time gives 1400 cycles, while draining it fully gives 300, so a larger battery used gently can last more cycles.
  • Down to 80% capacity: these cycle counts run until the battery holds 80% of its rated capacity. It does not stop working at that point, but it will run the equipment for less time.
  • Two capacity figures: the 36 Ah figure is a 20-hour discharge and the 32 Ah figure a 10-hour one. Faster discharge gets less out of a lead acid battery.
  • 9 A charge limit: this applies to float and to cyclic charging alike, so a stronger charger needs current limiting to suit.
  • 8.7 mΩ impedance: lower means less voltage sag under load. It is a handy comparison when checking an old battery against a new one.

Installing it

  • Terminals: the threads are in the battery, so have M5 bolts of a suitable length and crimped ring terminals to hand. Tighten to 2-3Nm, and no further.
  • Weight: at 11.2 kg it needs a secure shelf or strap, so that it cannot shift and strain the leads.
  • Short circuits: as a rule, cover loose leads while working, since a battery can deliver a very high current through a dropped tool.
  • Lifting: do not hang the battery by any handles where they are fitted.

Planning your system

In most systems, work out the load and the running time between charges, then choose a capacity that keeps each discharge shallow. Allow margin for ageing, because capacity falls over the years.

The job also needs a charger that can apply the cyclic voltage at the right current. If you use a battery tester, check it lists cyclic lead acid types of this size.

Other sizes sit among batteries and power supplies. Old batteries must go for recycling under local and national laws and regulations.

Standards and ratings explained

  • UL94:HB: a flammability class for plastics, and the lower of the two for this range. Choose the FR version where a specification asks for UL94:V0.
  • ISO9001: a standard for how a maker runs its quality management. It is not a performance rating for this battery.
