Frequently asked questions

What size is the NP38-12I?

197 (±1) mm long, 165 (±1) mm wide and 170 (±2) mm high. It has a mass of 14.2 kg.

What charge voltage does it need?

13.65 (±1%) V on float and 14.5 (±3%) V for cyclic or boost charging, both at 20°C. Use a charger set for lead acid batteries.

Can it be mounted on its side?

Yes. It can be installed and operated in any orientation except permanently inverted.

Can it go in a sealed box?

No. VRLA batteries release hydrogen gas which can form explosive mixtures in the air, so it must not be placed inside a sealed container.

How long does it last?

Yuasa gives a design life of up to 5 years at 20°C, and EUROBAT classes it Standard Commercial, 3 to 5 years. Heat and repeated deep discharge usually shorten real service life.

Is it flame retardant?

No, this one has the standard ABS case, rated UL94:HB. Yuasa also makes an FR version, rated UL94:V0.

Yuasa NP38-12I 12V 38Ah VRLA battery, front view

Yuasa NP38-12I 12V 38Ah VRLA Battery, M5 Threaded Terminals

Overview

VRLA means valve regulated lead acid. It is the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because you never top it up with water.

This Yuasa battery is a general purpose model. At 14.2 kg with bolted terminals, it is a heavy block, so plan its shelf and leads first.

How it works

  • Glass mat: the electrolyte is held in a mat rather than sloshing about as free liquid. That is why orientation is so flexible.
  • Lead calcium grids: lead calcium is widely used because it limits water loss and self discharge.
  • Valves: each cell has a low pressure release valve. Gas can escape and the valve then reseals.
  • Float and cyclic: float means the charger holds the battery topped up on standby. Cyclic means the battery is regularly discharged and fully recharged, which needs a different voltage.

Where to use it

Batteries of this size are often used as standby back-up in equipment such as a UPS.

Follow the battery size and type the equipment's maker asks for.

Keep it out of sealed enclosures. The gas it can release needs somewhere to go.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 20-hr rate: Ah is charge stored. The 38 Ah figure is measured over 20 hours, and a faster discharge gets less out of a battery.
  • 9.5 A charge limit: this applies to cyclic or boost charging. On float charge there is no limit.
  • Correction factors: the -3 and -4 figures adjust the charge voltage when the temperature is not the standard 20°C. Chargers without this feature rely on a reasonably steady temperature.
  • Temperature limits: it charges from -15°C to +50°C and discharges from -20°C to +60°C. Allow for that in an unheated enclosure.

Installing it

  • Terminals: this model uses bolted M5 female terminals. Tighten to 2.45 Nm, and keep polarity right.
  • Lifting: at 14.2 kg, lift it by the case. Do not suspend the battery by any handles where they are fitted.
  • Short circuits: tape or cover a loose lead while you work, since a battery can deliver a very high current through a dropped tool.

Planning your system

Work out the standby load of the system first, then check that this capacity covers the time your standard requires. Add margin for ageing, because capacity falls over the years.

You will also need a suitable charger or a charging circuit that matches the voltages above. If you use a battery tester, check it covers this voltage and size.

Old batteries must go for recycling under local and national laws and regulations.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EUROBAT Standard Commercial: an industry class that describes the expected life band, here 3 to 5 years. Treat it as a planning guide rather than a promise.
  • UL94:HB: a flammability class for plastics, and the case rating of this standard model. The FR version is rated UL94:V0, so check the model if a specification asks for that.
  • ISO9001: this covers the maker's quality management, not the performance of a single battery.
  • VdS: a German approvals body. This battery carries VdS No: G 182024, and it is worth quoting if a specification asks for it.
