Yuasa NPH5-12 12V 5Ah Standby AGM VRLA Battery, Faston 6.35mm

Overview

This is a sealed, valve regulated lead acid battery, often called a VRLA battery. AGM means the electrolyte is held in glass mat separators, so there is no free liquid to spill.

The NPH series is Yuasa's standby range, built to sit on charge for long periods and deliver power when the mains fails.

How it works

  • Valve regulated: each cell has a low pressure release valve that lets gas escape and then reseals, so the battery needs no topping up.
  • Float charging: in standby use the charger holds the battery at its float voltage, which keeps it full without overcharging.

Where to use it

Typical homes for a battery of this size are intruder alarm panels, fire alarm and access control power supplies, and small backup systems. Always match the voltage, capacity and terminal type the equipment calls for.

It charges from -15°C to +50°C, so keep it out of unheated lofts and hot plant rooms where possible.

What the figures mean in practice

  • Ah rating: the 20-hour figure is the capacity when discharged slowly. At faster rates the usable capacity falls, which is why the 10-hour figure is lower.
  • Self discharge: losing about 3% a month at 20°C means a stored battery still needs a periodic top-up charge.
  • Design life: the up to 5 year figure assumes 20°C; as a rule, higher temperatures shorten life.

Installing it

Fit it upright or at up to 90° from upright, and never inside a sealed container, because VRLA batteries can release hydrogen gas. Do not lift it by any leads.

Connect the Faston leads red to positive and black to negative, and check the charger's float voltage with a meter after fitting.

Planning your system

Standby time depends on the load: work out the quiescent and alarm current of the system before choosing the capacity. The guide to replacing alarm batteries covers the basics for intruder systems.

Other sizes are in the specialist and industrial batteries range, and the wider Yuasa batteries range covers other series. A battery tester helps confirm health at each service visit.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EUROBAT standard commercial: an industry class for the expected life of a battery kept on float charge.
  • UL94:HB: a flammability rating for the plastic case; HB is the standard grade, not a flame retardant case.
