Frequently asked questions

What is the capacity of the NP1.2-6?

1.2 Ah at the 20-hour rate, or 1.1 Ah at the 10-hr rate to 1.8V/Cell at 20°C.

What charging voltage does it need?

For standby use, float charge at 6.825 V per block (2.275 V per cell) at 20°C. For cyclic use, 7.26 V per block with current limited to 0.3 A.

Can it be fitted on its side?

Yes. It can be installed and operated in any orientation except permanently inverted.

How long will it last?

Yuasa gives a design life of up to 5 years at 20°C. Heat shortens battery life, so a cool position helps.

Can it go in a sealed box?

No. VRLA batteries release hydrogen gas, which can form explosive mixtures, so never place one inside a sealed container.

Yuasa 6V 1.2Ah Industrial VRLA Battery, FASTON 4.75 Terminals NP1.2-6

Overview

Small sealed lead acid batteries keep equipment running when the mains fails, or power it where there is no mains at all. The NP1.2-6 is one of the smallest 6 V batteries in Yuasa's NP range.

VRLA stands for valve regulated lead acid. The battery is sealed, and each cell has a low pressure release valve that lets gas escape and then reseals.

How it works

  • Absorbed Glass Mat: the electrolyte is held in glass mat separators, so there is no free acid to spill.
  • Gas recombination: gas made during charging recombines inside the battery, which is why it needs no topping up.
  • Lead calcium grids: the plate grids are lead calcium, chosen for long life.

Where to use it

As a rule, a 6 V 1.2 Ah battery suits small standby loads and portable kit. Always match the voltage, capacity, size and terminal type of the battery being replaced.

It works from -20°C to +60°C on discharge and -15°C to +50°C on charge, so avoid fitting it next to a heat source.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 1.2 Ah at the 20-hour rate: the battery can deliver about a twentieth of that for 20 hours. Higher currents give less total capacity, which is why the 10-hr figure is 1.1 Ah.
  • 6.825 V float: the voltage a standby charger should hold at 20°C. Charging higher or lower shortens the battery's life.
  • 3 % a month: the approximate self-discharge in storage at 20°C, so recharge stored batteries before they go flat.

Installing it

  • Terminals: the FASTON 4.75 tabs take push-on connectors. Check the equipment's leads match before ordering.
  • Position: mount it any way up except permanently inverted, and never in a sealed container.
  • Handling: lift the battery by its case, not by its leads, and keep tools away from both terminals at once to avoid a short circuit.
  • Old batteries: recycle them in line with local and national laws and regulations.

Planning your system

Other 6 V sizes in the range include the NP1-6 and the NP2.8-6, and the NP1.2-12 is the 12 V battery of the same capacity. Browse all Yuasa batteries or the wider specialist and industrial batteries range.

A lead acid battery charger set to the right float voltage keeps a spare ready for use.
