About this product

The Yucel Y1.2-12 is a 12 V, 1.2 Ah VRLA battery, where VRLA means valve regulated lead acid. It suits installers and maintenance teams replacing a battery of this size in alarm, standby or other equipment. It measures 97 x 47.5 x 51 mm, weighs 0.59 kg typical and has FASTON 4.75 mm terminals.

Key features

  • Standard 12 V block – 1.2 Ah at the 20-hour rate
  • Fits most ways round – any position except permanently inverted
  • Holds its charge in storage – capacity loss about 3% a month at 20°C
  • No topping up – a valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) design
  • Rated for commercial service – EUROBAT Standard Commercial, 3 to 5 years
  • Quick connection – FASTON tab terminals, 4.75 mm, that push on and pull off

For installers

  • Power: 12 V nominal. Float charge 13.65 V (±1%) at 20°C with no current limit; cyclic or boost charge 14.5 V (±3%) at 20°C, limited to 0.3 A.
  • Mounting: 97 x 47.5 x 51 mm (L x W x H), 54.5 (±2) mm over the terminals. Any position except permanently inverted.
  • Cabling: FASTON tab terminals, 4.75 mm. Check the existing leads carry the same size of connector.
  • Compatibility: check the charger and the equipment's own battery and charging figures against these.
  • Standards: IEC61056. Standard case ABS (UL94:HB); certifications include ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and UL.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the Y1.2-12?

97 mm long, 47.5 mm wide and 51 mm high, or 54.5 mm over the terminals, each ±1 mm (±2 mm over the terminals). It weighs 0.59 kg typical.

What charge voltage does it need?

13.65 V (±1%) on float and 14.5 V (±3%) for cyclic or boost charging, both at 20°C.

How long does it last?

Yuasa design life is 5 years at 20°C, and EUROBAT classes it Standard Commercial, 3 to 5 years. Heat and repeated deep discharge usually shorten real service life.

Is the standard case flame retardant?

No. The standard case is ABS rated UL94:HB; the flame retardant FR option uses a UL94:V0 case under its own code.

Can it go in a sealed box?

No. VRLA batteries release hydrogen, which mixed with air can become explosive, so do not install it in a sealed enclosure.

Yucel Y1.2-12 12V 1.2Ah VRLA Battery, FASTON 4.75 mm Terminals

Overview

VRLA batteries are the type many people call a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery, because they are never topped up with water.

This one is a 1.2 Ah, 12 V block from the Yucel range of maintenance-free lead acid batteries, with the standard ABS case.

How it works

  • Lead acid chemistry: the battery stores energy in lead plates and acid, and it prefers to be kept charged rather than left flat.
  • Valve regulated: each cell is sealed in normal use. A valve lets gas escape if pressure builds, then keeps the cell sealed again.

Where to use it

Blocks like this are often used as standby power in alarm panels, access control power supplies and similar equipment, so follow the battery type and size the equipment's maker asks for.

Charging runs from -15°C to +50°C and storage and discharge from -20°C to +60°C, so allow for that where the equipment sits somewhere unheated.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 1.2 Ah and 1.1 Ah: the first figure is measured over 20 hours and the second over 10 hours. The faster the battery is discharged, the less capacity it gives.
  • 18 A for 5 seconds: this is the maximum discharge current, a limit to stay under rather than a figure to design to.
  • 0.3 A charge limit: this applies to cyclic or boost charging only.
  • 100 mΩ impedance: impedance shows how much the battery resists current at 1 kHz. A battery tester helps to spot an ageing battery by comparing readings over time.

Installing it

  • Position: almost any way round works, but do not leave it permanently upside down.
  • Connections: as a rule, note which lead goes where before removing the old battery, then make the new connections fully home.
  • Short circuits: take care with tools near the terminals, since a lead acid battery can cause a spark or burn.

Planning your system

When replacing a battery, match the voltage, the terminals and the physical size first, then the capacity. The guide to replacing alarm batteries covers the wider job on an alarm system.

Other alarm batteries cover different sizes and terminal types if this one does not suit the panel.

Old batteries must be recycled at the end of their life under the law in force.

Standards and ratings explained

  • UL94:HB: this is a flammability rating for plastics. HB is the basic level; the flame retardant option uses a UL94:V0 case instead.
  • EUROBAT: this battery industry body classes batteries by expected life, and Standard Commercial means 3 to 5 years.
  • IEC61056: an international standard for general purpose lead acid batteries of the valve regulated type.
