An ANPR camera is a dedicated camera that reads vehicle number plates and turns them into text your system can act on — open a barrier, log an arrival, trigger an alert. It is not a normal CCTV camera with clever software bolted on, and that distinction is where most disappointing installs begin.
Plenty of people buy a good 4K dome, point it at a gateway, and wonder why the plate is a white smear. The camera was never the problem. The job was.
1. Why a normal camera won't do it
Reading a plate is a different optical problem from watching a car park. You need:
- A narrow, controlled field of view. The plate must fill enough of the frame to resolve the characters.
- Control of motion blur. A moving vehicle at a short shutter speed, or a stationary one at a long shutter — pick the wrong combination and the characters smear.
- Control of glare. A retroreflective plate under direct headlights or low winter sun blows out to white.
A general surveillance camera is tuned to give you a pleasing wide image of a scene. An ANPR camera is tuned to give you legible characters on a small, bright, moving rectangle. Those goals fight each other.
2. The single most important decision: the approach angle
Get this wrong and no amount of specification saves you.
You want the vehicle approaching close to head-on, with the camera off to a modest angle — not looking across the lane, and not so steep it's reading the plate from above. The wider the angle you force on it, the more the characters compress and the less reliably they resolve.
Trade Tip: Before you buy anything, walk the site and stand where you intend to mount the camera. Look at where a plate actually sits — usually somewhere around half a metre off the ground and often lower than people assume. The commonest ANPR mistake we see is a camera mounted at a nice tidy height for cabling that ends up reading roofs. Pick the position from the plate's point of view, then work out how to get power and data to it.
3. Lens and range — why motorised matters
The Hikvision iDS-2CD7A26G0/P-IZHSY is a 2MP DeepinView ANPR bullet with an 8-32 mm motorised lens and infrared to around 100 m. The motorised lens is the part that earns its keep: you set the zoom to make the plate the right size in frame at the exact distance you're working with, from the ground, without swapping optics.
Fixed-lens cameras force the mounting distance to suit the lens. A motorised varifocal lets the site dictate the position and the lens adapt — which is the right way round.
There's also a 4MP version, the iDS-2CD7A46G0/P-IZHSY, with a P-Iris lens on the same 8-32 mm range. More resolution is not automatically better here; a wider dynamic range and better iris control usually beat extra pixels for this specific job.
4. Lighting, and the reason plates go white
Number plates are retroreflective by design — they throw light straight back at its source. Point a strong infrared illuminator at one and you can produce a perfectly exposed scene with a completely illegible plate.
This is why a purpose-built ANPR camera controls its own exposure for the plate rather than the scene. It's also why the same camera can perform beautifully at 3 a.m. and struggle at 4 p.m. in January when the sun sits low behind an approaching vehicle. If your site has one bad direction, find it before you commit the mount, not after.
Weather compounds it. A plate carrying road film after a wet week reflects far less than a clean one, and horizontal rain on the camera's own front glass scatters the infrared straight back into the lens. Neither is a fault — both are Tuesday in Birmingham. It's worth accepting now that no ANPR install reads every plate every time, and specifying on that basis: know what happens to your process when a read fails, because sooner or later it will. A barrier that needs a fallback intercom is a working system. A barrier with no fallback is a queue.
Trade Tip: Test at the worst hour, not the convenient one. Commission at dusk with headlights on and again with low sun straight down the approach. Those two conditions expose almost every ANPR problem there is, and both are free to check.
5. What it plugs into
ANPR output only matters if something consumes it. The 2MP model above carries a Wiegand interface, which is what lets it speak to access-control equipment directly rather than only logging to a recorder.
Type wall, and it's a real one: an NVR is not a DVR, and an IP camera is not analogue. These are IP cameras and belong on an NVR with the right channel count and PoE provision. Don't assume an existing analogue recorder will take them — it won't. If you're mixing into an existing system, bring the recorder model to the counter and we'll check it properly rather than guess.
