Fan Isolator Switch: Why Your Extractor Needs One (2026)

A fan isolator switch cuts every conductor feeding an extractor fan — live, neutral and the switched live from the light circuit — so the fan is genuinely dead before anyone puts a screwdriver near it.

That third pole is the whole point, and it is the reason an ordinary light switch will not do.

Fit the wrong one and a fan that looks isolated is still holding a live conductor. Here is what to buy, where it goes, and the one product that gets confused with it.

1. What a fan isolator switch actually does

A bathroom extractor with a timer or humidistat has three connections coming into it: a permanent live, a neutral, and a switched live that tells it the light has gone on. Cut only the permanent live and the switched live is still there. Cut only the light circuit and the permanent live is still there.

A triple-pole isolator breaks all three at once. One pull of the cord and the fan is isolated from everything feeding it.

It is a maintenance device, not a control. You do not use it to turn the fan on and off day to day — you use it when the fan is coming down.

Trade Tip: the cord is the giveaway on a job you have not seen before. If there is a three-pole isolator on the ceiling, somebody wired that fan properly. If there is nothing, assume the fan is fed straight off the lighting circuit and treat every conductor as live until you have proved otherwise at the consumer unit.

2. Why three poles and not two

Double-pole switching breaks live and neutral. That is fine for an appliance with a simple supply, and it is what a 45A cooker switch or a shower pull cord does.

An extractor with a run-on timer is not that appliance. The switched live is a separate conductor from a separate part of the circuit, and a DP switch leaves it connected. Three poles, every time, on any fan with a timer or humidistat.

3. Where it goes

Outside the room, or inside it on the ceiling with a cord — those are your two options, and which one applies depends on the bathroom zones.

A pull-cord ceiling isolator keeps the switch itself out of reach of anyone in the bath, which is the reason cords exist in bathrooms at all. A plate switch has to go outside the room.

Whichever you choose, put it where an installer can reach it without a ladder over a bath. An isolator that is awkward to get to is an isolator that gets skipped.

4. Fan isolator or rotary isolator? Not the same thing

Search for "isolator" and you will get two completely different products. Buying the wrong one is a wasted trip at best.

A fan isolator is a 10A triple-pole switch, IP20, indoor, on a standard plate or a ceiling pull cord. It is for a domestic extractor.

A rotary isolator is a weatherproof IP65 box with a red-and-yellow handle, rated 20A, 32A or 63A across four poles at 230–415V. It is for outdoor plant, air conditioning and machinery — three-phase territory, not a bathroom ceiling.

Trade Tip: metal clad is not outdoor. It is a steel enclosure for somewhere things get bumped, and its IP20 rating tells you it keeps fingers out and nothing else. If the location gets wet, you need a genuinely weatherproof product, not a tougher indoor one.

5. Finishes, and the key-switch option

The triple-pole mechanism is the same across the range; the plate is what changes. Flat plate, screwless, brushed chrome, polished brass, black nickel, gunmetal — pick to match the rest of the room's wiring accessories rather than leaving one white plate in a chrome bathroom.

Do I legally need a fan isolator switch?
Every fixed appliance needs a means of isolation, and for an extractor with a timer that means isolating all three conductors. A triple-pole isolator is the normal way to achieve it. If you are unsure whether your installation complies, that is a question for a competent person, not a guess.

Can I use a normal light switch instead?
No. A single-pole light switch breaks one conductor. A fan with a run-on timer has a permanent live as well as a switched live, so the fan can remain energised with the light switch off.

Does a fan isolator need to be outside the bathroom?
A plate switch does. A ceiling-mounted pull-cord isolator can be inside the room, which is why cords are the usual solution in a bathroom. Check the zone your chosen position falls in before you fix anything.
