An outdoor socket needs three things: a weatherproof enclosure rated IP55 or better, RCD protection on the circuit, and a proper cable gland where the cable enters. Miss any one of them and you have built a hazard with a lid on it.
The good news is that the decision is simpler than the internet makes it look. There are really only two routes, and which one you take depends on whether you want a permanent fixture or a socket you can put away in October.
1. IP54, IP55, IP66 — what the numbers mean outdoors
The first digit is solids, the second is water, and outdoors it is the second digit that decides everything.
IP54 handles splashing. Adequate under a deep porch or a covered walkway where nothing is landing on it directly.
IP55 handles low-pressure jets from any direction. This is the sensible minimum for a socket on an exposed house wall in a British winter.
IP66 handles powerful jets. Worth it where the socket faces prevailing weather, sits low enough to catch splashback off a patio, or is anywhere near a pressure washer.
Trade Tip: the rating applies to the enclosure as installed, with the cover closed and the gland done up. An IP66 socket with the lid propped open while the mower is plugged in is, at that moment, an IP20 socket in the rain. Buy for how it lives with something plugged into it, not how it looks on the shelf.
2. Fixed socket or weatherproof extension?
A fixed outdoor socket is wired back to the consumer unit on its own protected circuit. It is tidy, permanent, and it is notifiable electrical work — a new outdoor circuit is not a DIY job in England and Wales, and it needs certifying.
A weatherproof extension gives you outdoor power from an existing indoor socket without new fixed wiring. Less elegant, far less commitment, and it comes indoors when you have finished.
Take a stance? If you use outdoor power more than a handful of times a year — mower, pressure washer, Christmas lights, hot tub — get a fixed socket fitted properly. If it is genuinely occasional, an extension is the honest answer and nobody needs to lift a floorboard.

3. RCD protection is not optional
Outdoors is the worst place to be relying on luck. Water, bare feet, metal tools and a long flex are the exact conditions an RCD exists for, and any socket outlet intended to supply equipment outdoors needs that protection.
If your consumer unit already provides RCD protection on the relevant circuit, that requirement may already be met — but "may" is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and the only way to know is for someone competent to look at the board.

4. Fixing, glands and the drip loop
Three things separate an outdoor socket that lasts from one that fills with water in its second winter.
Use the glands. Cable entries take a proper gland sized to the cable — that is what maintains the rating. A cable pushed through a knockout with silicone smeared round it is not a seal, it is an intention.
Leave a drip loop. Bring the cable up into the enclosure from below wherever you can, or leave a downward loop before it enters, so water runs off the cable instead of running along it into the box.
Mount it clear of splashback. Low on a wall above a hard patio means every downpour throws water back up at it. Higher is drier, and it is easier to reach with wet hands full of extension lead.

5. The occasional-use route
If a fixed circuit is more than the job warrants, a weatherproof extension does the same work for an afternoon and comes back inside afterwards.

Trade Tip: whichever route you take, unplug and coil the extension when you are done. An outdoor lead left connected all summer is a lead that spends every night with water sitting in the coupler — and it is the coupler, not the socket, that usually fails first.

Can I fit an outdoor socket myself?
Adding a new outdoor circuit is notifiable work in England and Wales and needs to be done and certified by a competent person. That is not merchant caution — it is the rule. A plug-in weatherproof extension needs no new fixed wiring and is a different proposition entirely.
What IP rating does an outdoor socket need?
IP55 is the sensible minimum on an exposed wall. IP54 is acceptable under genuine cover. Go to IP66 where it faces the weather or sits where a patio will throw water back at it.
Does an outdoor socket need its own RCD?
