Intermediate Switch: When You Need One and How It Works (2026)

An intermediate switch is the one you put in the middle when three or more switches need to control the same light. Two switches need two 2-way switches. Three switches need two 2-way switches and one intermediate between them.

That is the entire concept, and it explains why a long hallway with three switch positions cannot be built from three identical switches off the shelf.

Here is how it works, how to recognise one, and where people go wrong.

1. What an intermediate switch does

A 2-way switch has a common terminal and two travellers. Two of them wired together let you turn one light on or off from either end of a room — the classic upstairs-and-downstairs landing light.

Add a third position and that arrangement breaks down. You need a switch that does not connect a common to a traveller, but instead swaps the two travellers over. Flip it and the pair crosses; flip it back and they run straight through.

That crossover is what an intermediate switch is. It sits between the two 2-way switches, and every additional position you want is another intermediate added to the middle of the chain.

Trade Tip: count your positions before you buy anything. Two positions, buy two 2-way switches. Three positions, buy two 2-way and one intermediate. Four positions, two 2-way and two intermediates. The 2-way switches always live at the ends of the chain, and every switch in between is an intermediate. Get this wrong at the merchant and you get it wrong on the wall.

2. The classic staircase

The commonest real-world use is a hallway with a front door, a back door and a landing, all needing to work the same light.

The switch by the front door and the one on the landing are the two ends — those are 2-way. The one by the back door sits in the middle of the run and is intermediate. Come in the back, flip it, and the light responds regardless of what the other two are set to.

Long corridors, through-lounges, garages with two doors and big kitchens all end up with the same requirement, and the fix is always the same.

3. How to tell an intermediate from a 2-way

From the front, you often cannot. The plates look identical, and that is exactly how the wrong one ends up in a bag.

Turn it over. A 1-gang 2-way switch has three terminals: common, L1 and L2. A 1-gang intermediate has four, usually marked as two pairs. Four terminals on a single rocker means intermediate.

The other tell is the rocker action. An intermediate has no defined on or off position — it simply changes state. If a switch works "the wrong way up" depending on what the other switches are doing, that is not a fault, that is the whole design.

4. The wiring, in outline — and where to stop

Replacing an existing intermediate like for like is a straightforward job for a confident DIYer: isolate the circuit at the consumer unit, prove it dead, label every conductor before anything comes off, and put the new one back exactly as the old one came out.

Converting a 2-way arrangement into a 3-way one is a different job. It means running an additional three-core-and-earth between switch positions, and that is new fixed wiring in the fabric of the building.

Two things that catch people out either way. The switch drop is a lighting circuit conductor, not a neutral — the blue in a switch drop is very often a live conductor and should be sleeved brown. And a 47mm back box is worth fitting while the wall is open, because three-core-and-earth in a 25mm box behind a metal plate is a fight nobody wins twice.

Trade Tip: photograph the back of the old switch before you disconnect a single conductor, with the terminals readable. Do it even when you are certain you will remember. Every electrician has taken that photo, and every electrician has at some point needed it.

5. Choosing the plate

The mechanism is standard at 10AX. What changes is the finish and the plate style, and on a staircase you will be looking at three of them together, so mixing ranges shows.
