Two numbers decide your TV bracket: the VESA pattern and the weight rating. Screen size in inches is the least important of the three.
That's the bit the boxes get backwards. They shout "up to 80 inches" on the front and hide VESA 600 x 400 in the small print, when VESA is the thing that decides whether the bracket physically bolts to your telly.
We sell brackets over the counter at Villa Road every week, and the mistake we see most is somebody buying on inches, getting it home, and finding the holes don't line up.
Here's the order to do it in.
1. Find your VESA pattern first
VESA is the square or rectangle of four threaded holes on the back of your TV, measured in millimetres. VESA 400 x 400 means the holes are 400mm apart horizontally and 400mm vertically.
Measure it yourself rather than trusting the manual — centre of hole to centre of hole, across and down. It takes thirty seconds and it removes all the guesswork.
A bracket quoted as "VESA 600" supports patterns up to 600 x 400. Anything smaller within its range bolts on fine. Anything larger does not, no matter how generous the inch rating sounds.
Trade Tip: if the holes on the back of your TV are already filled with short bolts, take one out and take it with you. TV mounting bolts come in M4, M5, M6 and M8 and the thread pitch varies — the bolt in your hand settles an argument that a tape measure can't. Most bracket kits include a spread of bolts, but the one you need is the one that's already in there.
2. Weight rating is a safety figure, not a marketing one
Modern TVs are lighter than people expect — a 65in OLED can be under 25kg. But the bracket's rating has to cover the screen plus anything hanging off it, and it has to do it for years while somebody plugs cables in behind.
Never buy to the limit. If your TV is 38kg, a 40kg bracket is not the right answer.
The AV:Link 129.154UK is a fixed ultra-slim bracket supporting 32" to 80" screens, VESA 600, 40kg load. It's the standard living-room answer where the TV goes on the wall and stays there.
For anything bigger, the AV:Link 129.157UK takes 47" to 100", VESA 800, 60kg, on a 22mm profile. That 22mm is the gap between the back of the screen and the wall — worth knowing before you plan where the cables go.
3. Fixed, tilting or full-motion
Fixed. Sits flush, does nothing, costs least, and is the right answer roughly 80% of the time. If the TV is at eye level from where you sit, you do not need it to move.
Tilting. Angles down. Buy this when the TV is going above a fireplace or high on a kitchen wall, because a flat screen high up throws its picture at the ceiling.
Full-motion. Swings out on an arm. Genuinely useful in a corner, a kitchen you move around in, or a bedroom where you watch from two places. It also puts the most leverage on your wall fixings, so it's the one where the wall type matters most.
Be honest about which you'll use. We see a lot of full-motion brackets that have never been swung.
4. The wall decides more than the bracket does
This is where jobs go wrong, and it has nothing to do with which bracket you bought.
Solid brick or block. Straightforward. Proper masonry plugs and screws, drill on hammer, done.
Plasterboard on studs. The bracket must hit the timber studs — the plasterboard itself carries nothing meaningful. Find the studs, mark them, and set the bracket out to suit. If the stud spacing doesn't line up with the bracket holes, you need a mounting plate spanning two studs, not longer screws.
Dot-and-dab. The nastiest one, and very common in newer UK houses. Plasterboard is stuck to blockwork with adhesive dabs, leaving a void behind. Standard fixings pull the board off the wall. You need fixings long enough to reach the blockwork through the void and grip the block properly.
Trade Tip: tap the wall before you buy anything. A hollow, drummy sound over a hard wall is dot-and-dab, and it changes your fixings, not your bracket. Finding that out with a drill in your hand and a TV on the sofa is the wrong moment.
5. Get the height right, once
The middle of the screen should sit at eye level when you're seated — for most sofas that's roughly 100 to 110cm from the floor to screen centre.
Above a fireplace is higher than that, always. It's a design choice, not an ergonomic one, and it's exactly why tilting brackets exist.
Mark the bracket position, check it with a spirit level, then check it again. Every hole you drill in that wall is permanent.
