About this product

The Apollo 45681-508APO is a Series 65 12 volt relay base for switching ancillary equipment from a fitted detector. It suits installers working on 9V to 15V dc fire and security systems. It has a volt-free changeover contact, works latching or non-latching, and needs a Series 65 smoke or heat detector to function.

Key features

  • Switches other equipment – a volt-free changeover contact, a set of contacts with no power of their own
  • Suits fire or security work – can be set as latching or non-latching
  • Low profile – 100mm diameter x 25mm high
  • Can hold the detector in place – an aperture accepts the locking grub screw built into the detector case
  • Goes on only one way – one-way fit
  • Simple to terminate – zero-force nickel-plated steel terminals for attaching the detector

For installers

  • Power: 9 - 15 V DC. Average quiescent current <10μA at 12V, relay base alarm current <20mA @ 12V.
  • Mounting: 100mm diameter x 25mm high, 100g, in white self-extinguishing polycarbonate. Contains an earth connector.
  • Cabling: negative line to L1 IN and L1 OUT on the moulding terminals, positive line to IN+ and OUT+ on the terminal block. Do not connect any external wire to the -R terminal.
  • Compatibility: must be fitted with a Series 65 smoke or heat detector to function.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work without a detector fitted?

No. The relay is operated by the detector, so the base must be fitted with a Series 65 smoke or heat detector to function.

Will it run on a 24 V panel?

Only if the panel's output stays inside 9V to 15V dc, the voltage range of this base. Check the output before ordering.

What can the relay contact switch?

Up to 1A (resistive), with a maximum contact voltage of <50V AC & <75V DC. It is a volt-free changeover contact.

How is it set to latching or non-latching?

With a jumper on the PCB. Latching is the fire setting, and the jumper moves to another position so the base is non-latching for security systems.

Should anything be connected to the -R terminal?

No. Do not connect any external wire to it, because this may prevent the relay base from functioning correctly.

Apollo Series 65 Fire Alarm Relay Base, 12 V, Volt-Free Contact 45681-508APO

What this relay base does

A relay base lets a detector switch something else when it operates, such as a door release or a signal to another system, as well as raising its normal alarm. As a rule, what you connect must suit the contact ratings and your system design.

This is a low-profile base for Series 65 products, and it does nothing on its own. The detector operates the relay.

How it works

  • Volt-free contact: the contact carries no power of its own, so it can switch a separate circuit. Changeover means it has normally open and normally closed sides.
  • Latching: the relay stays operated after the detector triggers, until the circuit is reset. This is the fire position of the jumper.
  • Non-latching: the relay follows the detector and is the choice for security panels.

Where to use it

It suits 12 volt conventional fire work and security control panels, and the wiring diagrams show two wire and monitored four wire layouts. Keep it within its temperature range, away from condensation and icing.

Installing it

  • Inside the base: all electronic components, including the relay, sit on a PCB held by two screws.
  • End of line: the wiring diagram shows an optional end-of-line part for monitored circuits, and that depends on the panel.

Planning your system

The job also needs a Series 65 detector, such as a Series 65 smoke detector or a Series 65 heat detector.

It also needs a supply within the voltage range. Most commercial fire panels run on a higher voltage than this base accepts, so read the panel's output before ordering.

For other mounting options see the fire detector bases range, or the wider Apollo collection for more parts.
