Overview

A Cat6 cable carries network data along twisted copper pairs. Twisting each pair helps it reject interference from the pairs beside it.

This one is bulk cable, not a finished lead. You cut it to length and fit your own plugs or outlets at each end.

Where to use it

This cable has a PE sheath and is sold as duct cable. PE is often chosen for ducts because it copes with damp better than PVC.

Confirm the route with the job specification, especially where cable passes through escape routes.

What the figures mean in practice

• Speed rating: check the speed and frequency your job needs against the cable's documentation before buying.
• 90 metres: this is the longest run CQR gives. Plan the route before pulling cable, because bends and detours add to the measured length.
• 305 metres: divide this by your typical run to see how many runs one length will give, and allow for waste at each end.
• CSA: cross-sectional area, the size of the copper in each core. A smaller area means more voltage drop if power is sent along the cable.
• HDPE insulation: high density polyethylene, the plastic around each core.

Installing it

• Stripping: use the rip cord to open the sheath, then trim it back without nicking the core insulation.
• Solid core: solid conductors suit fixed wiring and do not like repeated flexing. Use stranded patch leads for the last connection to equipment.
• Testing: test every finished run with a cable tester before closing up the route.

Planning your system

The cable is only part of the job. You will also need RJ45 connectors or outlets, a crimp tool, and usually patch panels at the equipment end. Check each one states that it suits solid Cat6.

Standards and ratings explained

• ISO 11801: the international standard for general building cabling.
• EN50575: the European product standard for how cables in buildings react to fire.
• Euro Class Fca: the classes run from Aca down to Fca, and Fca is the lowest of them. It has nothing to do with speed or data quality.
