What this emergency light does

Most of the time this CQR spot does nothing you can see. It waits on the mains, keeps its battery charged and comes on from that battery if the supply fails.

A black fitting is mainly a matter of looks, and it suits dark or exposed ceilings where a white ring would draw the eye. An emergency downlight is still only one part of an emergency lighting system.

How it works

• Non-maintained: the LED stays off in normal use, and only operates during a power outage.
• Foldable converter: the electronics sit in a separate body on a lead behind the head. Folding it helps it pass through the ceiling opening.
• Choice of lens: one lens gives a long narrow beam, and the other spreads the light more widely. Only one is used at a time.

Where to use it

It is rated IP20, so keep it to dry indoor ceilings with a mains supply close by. Choose the lens by the shape of the space.

Escape routes, stairs and exit doors have their own requirements. Follow the emergency lighting rules and your fire risk assessment.

What the figures mean in practice

• Lumens: a measure of light output. It differs by lens, so check the spacing for the lens you actually fit.
• L80 50,000hrs: a rated life figure for the light output, not a promise about the battery.
• 6500K: a cool white colour of light, whatever the colour of the fitting.

Installing it

• Supply: connect it to the local lighting circuit it backs up, so it responds if that circuit fails. Isolate before working.
• Spacing: Check the spacing for your lens and mounting height before fixing positions.

Testing and upkeep

This code is not the self-test version, so plan on manual testing. That means removing power, waiting 3 hours and checking the fitting is still lit.
