What a door loop is for

A lock, reader or contact fitted in a door needs its cable to cross from the frame to the door leaf. A door loop gives that cable a protected path, so it is not left exposed where it can be cut or worn.

This Haydon loop is the armoured surface mounted type. It suits access control work and any door where a cable has to move with the leaf.

Where to use it

It goes across the hinge side of the door, where the cable can flex as the door opens. A typical job is an electric lock, reader or contact fitted in the door leaf.

Being vandal resistant, it is a sensible choice where a plain cable would be within reach. Check with the job's designer before using it in the open.

What the figures mean in practice

• 30cm: this is the loop's length. Measure across the opening with the door fully open before choosing this size.
• 8mm internal diameter: this is the space the cables share. Add up the outside sizes of every cable, not just one, and leave them room to move.

Installing it

• Before fixing: hold the loop in place and open the door fully, to check it neither pulls tight nor catches.
• Cable first: draw the cables through before fixing both ends, as this is hard to do once it is on the door.
• Fixings: the screws are included and sit recessed in the end caps. Use fixings that suit the door and frame if those supplied do not.

Planning your system

The loop only carries the cable. An access control system also needs the lock, a controller, a power supply and an exit device, and anything on an escape route needs a release route agreed with whoever holds the fire strategy.
