Ubiquiti POE-24-24W-G PoE injector, front view with LAN and POE ports

Ubiquiti Gigabit PoE Injector, 24V 1A Passive, 24W POE-24-24W-G

Overview

A PoE injector adds power to a network cable, so one cable can power a device that sits somewhere without a socket. That is useful for a radio on a mast or a unit high on a wall.

How it works

  • Two sockets: the network connects to Data IN, and the cable to the powered device connects to POE. The mains lead goes to the IEC socket.
  • Passive power: passive PoE applies its voltage without first checking what is connected. That is why the device at the far end must be right for it.
  • Earth path: static damage is a leading cause of outdoor device failures. A grounded adapter with Ubiquiti TOUGHCable and TOUGHCable Connectors gives it a route away.

Where to use it

It suits a single device fed from an indoor point, such as a wireless link to another building. The injector stays inside, while the powered device can be outside on its own rating.

For many devices, a PoE switch is usually tidier than several injectors. Check its voltage and type against each device first.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 24VDC @ 1.0A: the device must accept 24V, and should draw no more than 1.0A. The voltage has to match, while current is the limit.
  • Cable length: voltage falls along the cable, so long runs at low voltage leave less for the device. Check the far end's limits.
  • Inrush current: the brief surge when power is first applied. This can matter when several adapters share one protective device.

Installing it

  • Order of work: connect the data cables first and apply mains last. Never plug the POE socket into a laptop or a switch port.
  • Earth: the static protection depends on a mains supply with a working earth, so check the outlet first.

Planning your system

Choose your network cable with this in mind: the static protection relies on Ubiquiti TOUGHCable and TOUGHCable Connectors, as an unshielded cable gives no drain route. Add the device's own mounting and a mains outlet near the injector.
