Ubiquiti UniFi U6 Pro WiFi 6 Access Point, 4x4 MU-MIMO, PoE, Ceiling or Wall U6-PRO

Overview

An access point adds wireless coverage to a wired network. It takes one network cable from a switch and turns it into a Wi-Fi signal for phones, laptops, tills and tablets.

This Ubiquiti model is a slim round unit for a ceiling or wall, built for WiFi 6. It suits large offices and other spaces where many devices share the network at once.

How it works

• Two bands: it broadcasts on 2.4 GHz for range and on 5 GHz for speed, so devices can use whichever suits them.
• MU-MIMO: short for multi-user, multiple input multiple output. The access point talks to several devices at the same moment instead of one after another, with 4 x 4 streams on 5 GHz.
• Zero wait DFS: DFS lets an access point use extra channels that it must share with radar. Zero wait means it can move to them without the usual listening delay.
• Management: it can be managed over Ethernet, through the same single port that carries data and power, or over Bluetooth.

Where to use it

Centre it in the area it serves, on the ceiling where possible, so the signal spreads evenly. Walls, floors and metal reduce range, so busy or awkward buildings usually need more than one access point.

It is rated IP54 and works from -30 to 60° C. In most installations it goes indoors, on a ceiling or wall.

What the figures mean in practice

• 4.8 Gbps on 5 GHz: the combined radio rate across all streams. Each device gets a share, and real speeds also depend on distance and the device's own Wi-Fi.
• 300+ concurrent clients: how many devices can be connected at once. Heavy use, such as video calls, lowers the practical number.
• 13W maximum: its worst-case draw. Add it to the power budget of the PoE switch along with any cameras on the same switch.

Installing it

• Cable: run one network cable from the switch to the access point. Cat6 is a common choice for new runs.
• Fixing: fit the included mount to the wall or ceiling, then fit the access point to it.
• Reset: a factory reset button returns it to default settings if it needs setting up again.

Planning your system

The job also needs a PoE switch or an optional 48V, 0.5A PoE adapter, network cable and a way to manage the UniFi network. Plan the power budget across every PoE device first.

Standards and ratings explained

• WiFi 6: the trade name for 802.11ax. It handles many devices better than WiFi 5, and older devices still connect.
• IP54: protected against dust and against water splashed from any direction.
• WPA3: the latest Wi-Fi security standard, with stronger protection for passwords.
