About this product

The Vanderbilt PDM-IXE18 (V54531-F120-A100) is a dual PIR and microwave detector for intruder alarm systems. It suits installers who want two detection channels on a Grade 2 job, across an 18m volumetric range. It runs at 10.587GHz, and its end of line resistors are already fitted.

Key features

  • Two ways of sensing – passive infrared (PIR) and microwave (MW) channels together
  • Fewer false alarms – high immunity, with the Matchtec algorithm comparing both channels
  • Long reach – 18m volumetric range with undercrawl protection
  • Can be sited close together – the algorithm reduces interference between MW modules
  • Less resistor wiring – end of line resistors are pre-fitted
  • Quicker to test – Auto Walktest without repeated openings of the detector

For installers

  • Power: nom. 12V DC, 9V DC ~ 16V DC, 4.8mA (rms) idle, 6.7mA (rms) with LED on. Alarm at 8.0V DC ± 0.5V DC.
  • Mounting: optional PZ-MBG2 bracket for wall and ceiling mounting, with cable guiding.
  • Cabling: open collector outputs, R=35 Ω, max current 120mA. Pre-fitted end of line resistors RI 4.7kΩ, RF 2.2kΩ, REOL 4.7kΩ.
  • Compatibility: ready for Vanderbilt SPC and Sintony alarm panels. Other panels by replacing the pre-fitted resistors with optional plug-in end of line boards.
  • Standards: VdS Class B, EN 50131-2-4 Grade 2, IP41 / IK02.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dual technology detector?

One that uses two sensing methods in a single unit. The PDM-IXE18 combines passive infrared (PIR) and microwave (MW) channels.

Does the PDM-IXE18 have anti-mask?

Not on this code. It is a dual detector at 10.587GHz, and the anti-mask versions carry a T at the end of the model name.

What grade is it?

Grade 2. It is approved to EN 50131-2-4 Grade 2 and VdS Class B.

How far does it detect?

18m with the standard volumetric mirror. The optional PO-C30 curtain mirror forms a monitored area of up to 25m.

Is it pet immune?

Pet immunity is an option, not standard. The PO-CL pet clip is for PDM-I12, so check its fit on this model first.

Will it work with any alarm panel?

Not without checking the resistor values. It is ready for Vanderbilt's SPC and Sintony panels, and other panels need the matching optional plug-in end of line board.

Vanderbilt V54531-F120-A100 dual PIR and microwave detector, front and side view

Vanderbilt PDM-IXE18 Dual PIR and Microwave Detector, 10.587GHz, 18m, Grade 2 V54531-F120-A100

Overview

A detector that relies on a single sensing method can be fooled by anything that imitates it. This model pairs infrared with microwave and weighs the two against each other before it decides.

Vanderbilt's dual and PIR detectors share the same low-profile housing, so an intruder cannot tell which type is on the wall.

How it works

  • Infrared channel: a passive infrared sensor reacts to heat moving across its view and sends out nothing itself.
  • Microwave channel: a microwave sensor sends out a low-power signal and looks for changes caused by something moving.
  • Matchtec processing: Vanderbilt's algorithm analyses the relative strength of the two signals from a moving object, then makes its decision.
  • Double mirror optic: the MAGIC mirror gives homogeneous coverage and sensitivity to all areas within the detection field.

Where to use it

It suits graded alarm systems where the risk assessment calls for Grade 2. The IP41 / IK02 housing and -10°C ~ 55°C operating range describe its limits, so check them against the location.

As a rule, IP41 gives little protection against water, so a dry, sheltered position is the sensible choice. Microwave can see through thin partitions, so aim it away from areas outside the protected space.

What the figures mean in practice

  • 10.587GHz: this is the microwave frequency of this model. Other models in the family use other frequencies, so order by the full code.
  • Walk speeds: 0.2m/s ~ 3.0 m/s is the band of movement speeds covered.
  • Open collector output: this output switches a connection rather than supplying power, and the maximum current is 120mA.
  • Current draw: low standby current helps when sizing the back-up battery in the panel, because every detector adds to the load.
  • Voltage control: the detector raises an alarm at 8.0V DC ± 0.5V DC, so a failing supply shows itself.

Installing it

  • Resistors: end of line resistors let an alarm panel tell a healthy circuit from a cut or shorted cable. They come pre-fitted, which removes resistor wiring on Vanderbilt panels.
  • Bracket: the optional PZ-MBG2 suits wall and ceiling mounting. The optional PO-FM flush mount housing base is for PDM-I12, so confirm fit first.
  • Walk test: Auto Walktest avoids reopening the detector or changing DIP switches during testing.
  • Several detectors: reduced interference between the MW modules gives more freedom in choosing where each one goes.

Planning your system

The job also needs a compatible alarm panel, cable and a supply within the range above. On a panel outside the SPC and Sintony ranges, match the panel's resistor values to an optional plug-in end of line board before ordering.

If the site calls for anti-mask, choose a T version instead. If it has animals, read about pet immunity before deciding on a position, as it is only an option.

This detector sits within the wider Vanderbilt range, so check other parts of the system against their own documentation.

Standards and ratings explained

  • EN 50131-2-4 Grade 2: EN 50131 is the European standard for intruder alarm systems, and part 2-4 covers combined infrared and microwave detectors. Security grades run from 1 to 4, and a higher grade answers a higher risk.
  • VdS Class B: VdS is a German testing and approval body, and this is the class for this model.
  • IP41 / IK02: IP covers solids and water, and IK covers resistance to impact. A low IK number means it is not intended to take knocks.
