Choosing Smart Dimmer Switches

Decide first whether the dimmer joins an Ajax hub system or works on its own over Wi-Fi, then check the wiring in the switch box and the lamps it has to dim.

Ajax SoloButton panels and the LightCore relay

An Ajax LightSwitch dimmer is built from two parts. The SoloButton (Dimmer) is just the touch front panel: the White 91254.257.WH1, for example, will not switch or dim lights without the LightCore (Dimmer) relay installed behind it. The LightSwitch Dimmer with LightCore Relay supplies that relay, needs no neutral because it takes its power from the phase alone, and installs into a standard European (55) mounting box.

Touch, backlight and dimming control

Panels such as the Olive 98612.257.OL1 and Fog 98608.257.FG1 respond to a hand within 15 mm of the panel, and the Fog panel sets the level with a capacitive touch slider. The Black 98607.257.BL1 and Grey 98610.257.GR1 remember the last brightness level, and the soft LED backlight on the Ivory 98611.257.IV1 and Oyster 98613.257.OY1 can be switched off in the Ajax app. The LightSwitch Dimmer is compatible with incandescent, halogen and dimmable LED lamps rated 8-150 VA, and has a fuse, a software overcurrent trip and temperature protection.

Knightsbridge Wi-Fi dimmer module

The Knightsbridge VFRKW is a direct replacement smart Wi-Fi dimmer module in the offset position. It is controlled from a smartphone or tablet through the SmartKnight or Smartlife apps at home or away, and connects with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts for voice control. Its timer switches and dims the lights on a schedule, the app can remove flicker and adjust the dimming curve, and it supports 2-way or 3-way dimming in conjunction with retractive switches.
