Lighting Controllers & Hubs

Lighting controllers set the colour, brightness and timing of LED tape, or make a wall switch smart. This page holds LYYT and Knightsbridge LED tape controllers, worked by IR remotes, RF remotes and touch plates or Wi-Fi apps, Ajax LightCore in-wall relays that turn a European (55) light switch into a contactless smart switch, and the Knightsbridge POTHBRC programming remote, which sets parameters on multiple sensors.

Choosing Lighting Controllers & Hubs

Start with what is being controlled, LED tape or a mains lighting circuit behind a wall switch, then choose the remote, app or panel.

RGB and RGBW tape controllers

For colour changing tape, the LYYT 153.751UK runs RGB tape from a 44 key IR remote, with 20 preset static colours, 6 colour changing modes with speed control and 6 memory banks for manual colour mixes. The Knightsbridge LEDFRA9 is an RF controller with a touch remote for RGB flex, rated 216W at 12V and 432W at 24V with a detection range of 20 metres. The LEDFRA6 does the same job for RGBW, rated 288W at 12V and 576W at 24V with a 30 metre detection range.

Single colour dimming

The LYYT 153.793UK is an in-line RF controller and dimmer for single colour 12-24Vdc LED tape, with DC jack input and output. Its handheld 14-key remote gives 4 preset brightness modes, 2 dynamic modes, 4 DIY brightness modes and a delay off mode.

Wi-Fi, app and voice control

The Knightsbridge LEDFWIFI connects over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi for RGB and colour temperature control from a phone or tablet, schedules on and off times with randomisation, and groups fittings into zones or scenes. The LYYT 153.896UK RGBW controller has a touch RF wall plate and runs on the Tuya app with 8 preset lighting effects, sound-to-light and a timer. The LEDFWIFI and 153.896UK work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Ajax LightCore relays

The Ajax LightCore relays fit a standard European 55 box behind a LightSwitch touch panel, which is sold separately, and need no neutral. They connect to an Ajax hub over the Jeweller radio protocol, with an open-space range of up to 1,100 m, and control lighting from 5 W to 600 W. The 63116.142.NC 2-way relay works in two-way circuits for control from two locations.

Frequently asked questions

How does an LED tape remote control work?

An LED tape remote sends commands to a small controller wired between the driver and the tape, which switches, dims or changes the colour of the light. Infrared remotes need a clear line of sight to the receiver, while RF remotes do not, so the controller can be hidden. Some kits use a wall plate instead. The range here includes IR, RF and touch remote controllers.

Can I control my LED strip lights with my phone?

Yes, fitting a Wi-Fi LED controller lets a phone app switch, dim and change the colour of LED strip lights. The controller joins your home Wi-Fi network, and some apps also set on and off schedules or group several strips into zones. A standard IR or RF controller works with its own remote instead of a phone. The range here includes Wi-Fi controllers for RGB and RGBW tape.

Can Alexa control LED lights?

Yes, Alexa can control LED lights that run through a compatible smart controller, bulb or switch. For LED tape, a Wi-Fi controller is added to the circuit and its app account is linked to Alexa, so spoken commands can switch, dim or change the colour of the tape. Some controllers also work with Google Assistant. The range here includes Wi-Fi tape controllers with voice control.

What is an LED controller?

An LED controller sits between an LED driver and the lighting to switch it, dim it or change its colour, usually by remote, wall plate or app. Single-colour controllers adjust brightness, while RGB and RGBW models mix colours and run effects. Smart in-wall relays fitted behind a touch switch can also bring a mains lighting circuit under app control. The range here includes tape controllers and in-wall relays.
