Overview

An RJ45 connector is the plug on the end of a network lead. You crimp it onto the cable, and its contacts press into the cores to make the connection.

This Haydon part is the standard crimp version, so the cores are trimmed to length before the plug goes on. A pack gives enough plugs to terminate several runs and allow for the odd mistake.

Where to use it

Use it where a fixed or made-up length of Cat5e cable needs a plug on the end, such as a lead to a camera or a switch. A factory-made lead is often the better choice for short connections at equipment, as it comes already terminated and tested.

What the terms mean in practice

• 8p8c: 8 position, 8 contact. All eight cores of a four-pair cable get their own contact.
• Crimp connector: the plug is squeezed onto the cable with a hand tool, and it cannot be reused once crimped.
• Rapid fit: a different version that lets the cable pass through the plug without pre-trimming. This part is not that version.

Installing it

• Before crimping: strip only as much sheath as you need, keep the pair twists close to the plug, and follow one wiring order at both ends.
• After crimping: test every finished end before fixing the cable in place, because a single misplaced core stops the link working.
