Dome Cameras

A camera inside a domed cover, mounted flat to a ceiling or wall, which hides the direction of the lens and keeps a low profile. Fixed domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G2-IS watch one scene, while motorised and PTZ domes such as the DS-2CD2746G2H-IPTRZS2U/SL and DS-2DE4425IWG1-E can be re-aimed or zoomed remotely.

A dome sits flat under a cover and hides where it points, which suits interiors and positions within reach; a bullet projects from the wall as a visible deterrent and suits long outdoor views. Vandal domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CD3146G2-ISU carry an IK10 impact rating, so they suit entrances, stairwells and car parks.

IK10 is an impact rating for enclosures: the IK10-rated Dahua IHDBW3541E-AS-S22, for example, is stated to take more than 5 strikes from a 5 kg hammer dropped from 40 cm, an impact energy of 20J, so the housing resists being struck or kicked. Vandal domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CE57H0T-VPITF, DS-2CD3146G2-ISU and DS-2CD2183G2-IU are rated IK10. Choose one where the camera is within reach, such as a stairwell, entrance or car park.

Dome cameras come as IP and HD analogue models. IP domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G2-IS connect to an NVR over network cable with PoE, and Turbo-HD domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CE56D0T-IRMMF connect to a DVR over coax. ESP HDview domes such as the H512VDW are IP PoE with a 2.8-12mm lens, so check the recorder type before choosing.

A compact dome for interiors and low ceilings, where a full-size dome would stand out. Hikvision mini domes include the DS-2CD2526G2-IS at 2MP, the DS-2CD2543G2-IS at 4MP and the DS-2CD2583G2-IS at 8MP, and the DS-2CD2E43G2-U is an in-ceiling mini dome with a microSD slot for cards of 512GB.

Yes, with infrared or, on ColorVu models, white light. IR domes such as the Hikvision DS-2CE56D0T-IRMMF show a monochrome picture using Smart IR, and ColorVu domes such as the DS-2CD2187G3-LIS2UY stay in colour with an F1.0 lens and Smart Hybrid Light. Keep the dome cover clean, because dirt on it can reflect infrared back into the image.

A dome camera that pans, tilts and zooms by motor, so an operator or tracking rule can follow a subject. The Hikvision DS-2DE4425IWG1-E is a 4MP PTZ speed dome with 25× optical zoom, the DS-2DF8C842IXG1-ELWY an 8MP PTZ with 42× zoom and IR up to 500 m, and the TandemVu DS-2SE7C425MW-AEB(14F1)(P3) pairs a PTZ with a panoramic lens.

A dome whose lens can be panned, tilted, rotated and zoomed remotely during set-up, so the view is framed without a ladder. The Hikvision DS-2CD2746G2H-IPTRZS2U/SL is a 4MP AcuSense PTRZ dome with a 2.8-12mm lens, and the DS-2CD2787G2H-LIPTRZS2U/SL is a 4K ColorVu PTRZ dome with Smart Hybrid Light and a strobe and siren.

A fisheye or multisensor dome can. The Hikvision DS-2CD6395G1E-IVS is a 9MP fisheye camera with a 2mm lens that gives a 360-degree panoramic image, the DS-2CD6D55G2-IZHS is a 5MP multisensor camera, and the Hanwha Vision PNM-C7083RVD is a panoramic camera, for areas that would otherwise need several fixed domes.
