Choosing Penton Products

Plan a Penton system starting with the loudspeakers, then the amplifier and controller, and decide early whether it must work as a voice alarm.

Loudspeakers for indoor spaces

Ceiling speakers such as the RCS3/T have a twin cone driver for a wider frequency response, and the RCS8TCOAX pairs a 215mm bass/mid-range driver with a 25mm Mylar dome tweeter and a 20 watt/100 volt transformer. The APC4T/ENC is a wall-mountable plastic cabinet speaker rated 4W. For large open spaces, the GB20T/ENC spherical speaker covers 360 degrees horizontally, and column speakers such as the MCS40T/ENC give a controlled coverage pattern for places such as airports and churches.

Outdoor and harsh areas

The MHS20T/ENC metal re-entrant horn is non-corrosive and resistant to salt laden air, with a lockable stainless steel bracket and loop in, loop out cabling, and the PH20A-24 horn has a built-in 20W amplifier, runs from 24Vdc and is rated IP66. Sound projectors include the CAD10/T, rated IP66, and the aluminium CELL10/T, rated IP55 with 100V tappings of 10/5/2.5/1.25W. The SENTRY6ST/ENC is a vandal proof metal cabinet loudspeaker rated IP52 for internal use.

Voice alarm

For voice alarm and evacuation, choose speakers certified to EN54-24, such as the APC4T/ENC, MCS80T/ENC and SENTRY6ST/ENC. The IDA8C-C1-2I master controller is EN54-16 certified, routes 48 audio channels and serves up to 256 zones on ATEIS Local-Net, and IDA8SAB-C1 units add 8 zones and 2 backup amplifiers. Paging consoles include the CD8-AS and the 16-zone CD16-AS.

Amplifiers and IP audio

The BPA-1000 is a 2U 19" bridging amplifier for 100V, 50V or 8 Ohm lines, and the DPA4125 class-D amplifier draws 0.2W per channel in standby. The DPAFOUR125 gives 4 x 125W with a 24VDC battery back-up input. TERRACOM products carry audio over IP: the TERRA-AMP has two 15W outputs and runs on PoE, the IPBX-2C20 makes standard low impedance speakers IP addressable, and the TERRA-K is a gooseneck paging and intercom microphone.

What are EN54-24 speakers?

They are loudspeakers, such as ceiling, cabinet or column speakers, certified to EN 54-24, the European standard for loudspeakers in voice alarm and evacuation systems. Penton models certified to EN54-24 include the APC4T/ENC cabinet speaker, the RCS4FT/ENC ceiling speaker, the MCS80T/ENC column speaker and the SENTRY6ST/ENC vandal proof speaker. Pair them with EN54-16 control equipment such as the IDA8C-C1-IO controller.

What are ENC speaker models?

They are speaker versions supplied with a capacitor for DC line monitoring, which supervised 100V speaker circuits need. On Penton models the ENC suffix marks this version, and the RCS4FT/ENC, CAD10T/ENC, PWC6T/ENC and SENTRY6ST/ENC are all supplied with the capacitor. Separately, the VA-EOL end-of-line board detects open or short circuit faults on a loudspeaker line and its branches without extra loopback cabling.

How do I set the volume of a 100V line speaker?

Choose a transformer tapping on the speaker, or fit a remote volume control. The RCS4FT/ENC has 100V taps of 4, 2, 1, 0.5 and 0.25W, and the CELL10/T has taps of 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25W. For a zone that users adjust, the VCT80/R is an 80W remote volume controller with 10-step attenuation that can be flush or surface mounted.

How does an IP PA system work?

An IP PA system carries live paging, stored messages, background music and intercom over a TCP/IP network. Penton's TERRACOM range works this way, and devices such as the APH30-IP horn speaker and the GB20-IP spherical speaker are powered over Ethernet. The PPM-IT5 is a 5" touchscreen paging console, and the TERRA-FXO lets telephones page into the system.

Which outdoor PA speakers should I choose?

Choose a weatherproof model with an IP rating that suits the position: under IEC 60529, IP66 means dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. The CAD10/T sound projector and the PH20A-24 horn are rated IP66, and the CELL10/T aluminium projector is rated IP55. The MHS20T/ENC metal horn is non-corrosive for indoor and outdoor use, and the CRSC6 cover converts standard ceiling speakers for damp, humid or exterior areas.

What is a school sound system?

It is a system that handles teaching audio, paging, messaging, class change scheduling and intercom in a school. Penton's School Sound System runs over IP and is built around the TERRA-SAP, a networkable processor with a 20W x 2 channel amplifier, and BCM201W or BCM201B boundary microphones serve intercom and classroom speech monitoring. TerraManager software handles paging, messaging, recording and bell scheduling.
